Performance CDI success!

Success story.

Hurrah! Eventually there's been an breakthrough on the performance CDI front. After having the afore mentioned problems I've finally found a worker.

I noticed on EBay somebody selling an performance CDI unit specifically for an XTRS, excellent I thought. However the unit sold together with an adaptor from round to square plug sold for £50.00.

Fifty quid for a CDI? The average price for these CDI units is about £12.00. All the other units I tried previously didn't even total that. It was because they were so cheap I tried a few out. No way I fancied paying well over those odds. You can't blame them though. Supply and demand and all that and I sure as heck had my problems finding one that works. However, I'm smarter than that. I took a good look at the unit visually then took off to AliExpress.

The unit itself was yellow (which isn't a bad thing now is it?), that made it standout for finding one elsewhere. I found some. One thing I noticed was that on one of the components on the CDI's circuit board there was a coloured sticker or marker. Some were brown, red, blue, green etc. I figure this meant there was some slight kind of difference between the units. The one on the EBay model was a yellow sticker, I found one with a yellow sticker and with a square plug, no need for an adaptor. For about £15.00 and decided to take a gamble on it being identical. Well it worked, so whether it was identical or not I don't know? I would highly think so but, it works, which is all that matters.

Identified on the case as:

CG series 50 - 300cc
SW- CDI29

Just searching these details in an internet search engine I found a few more, again on AliExpress. Remember, to get the lowest price available it would be up to you to shop around on that site or elsewhere.

  1. Hi there, I apologize for sending the other comment as 'guest', however did you notice a difference with the new CDI?

  2. Well, I didn't really ride it hard with the original CDI. However with the performance CDI, It does seem nice on acceleration when you do use the revs range, obviously on the highway. With the 16T front sprocket the thing doesn't really gain much more speed in 1st & 2nd after so far, so you can't red line those really you wouldn't gain anything. But once you get into 3rd & use the rev range through to 5th, it's pretty nice. That would obviously be the curve. Now the curve is adjustable but, on the unit itself. Which means you have to remove the tank each time to try a different setting. Something I'm not into doing at the minute. So it is possible to adjust it to a more preferred setting, if you have the patience to do so. You can always play around with that.

  3. Hey Ashley,

Sorry it has been a while since I read your response to my last pose (on the other thread).

I saw this on ebay and I was kinda like the same as you - what the hell? £50 is a high expense on a CDI... However, I may just get it! It would be rude not to I suppose.

I have jetted mine to 105 with a free flow air filter, and a 17t front sprocket. I also put a glass fuel filter on, not that that matters. I'm hitting rev limiter in 1,2&3 - 4 it doesn't quite get there and 5 it sits comfortable. I am easily hitting 70mph - no more, unless I have a good run. I have an kmh to mph converter on, which helps! Just waiting on one of those sports pipes/'silencers' to arrive so I can cut that standard one off!

So... after all that, I am wondering what difference will the CDI make? I have a #110 jet.
Fork oil to be changed now.

  4. It's essentially the same as the CDI I bought for about £15 but, they charge £50 for it & already had them shipped over.
The only thing is; this one I chose the square connector type the bike has. Theirs I think is the round type & you have to buy a square to round plug adaptor wire along with it!

I still have to change the front sprocket but, maybe 16T the original is actually 15T, I will do that when the chain gets swapped soon most likely. You're supposed to swap both sprockets & chains all together everytime but, they're so cheap for the bike, it doesn't matter if you wear one a bit on a used chain or vice versa.

I get about 70 mph, until it meets a slight upward slope but, did get a bit more with my baffle in my exhaust. The baffle screw / bolt vibrated out, baffle came out & car ran over it & bent it on the edges. I need to heat it up & try to hammer it in shape find a bolt with mating thread & put it back.

The CDI is seeming not to do much in final gear sometimes & then at others seems to (limiter) it's odd. I think the bike has only so much balls to the engine anyway, which makes the limiter redundant. i.e if the bike was cable of 85-90 mph then it would work, letting it get to the speed & not limiting the revs. I think it helps acceleration more. There is an adjustable screw for the curve but since you have to remove the tank each time I haven't played with settings!
